While performing at an airshow in Lynchburg Virginia, Navy Commander Dave Koss made a “lower than normal maneuver” and has now stepped down as boss of the Blue Angels.

Koss said, “With deep personal regret I shared with my command today that I will be voluntarily leaving the greatest flight demonstration team. I performed a maneuver that had an unacceptably low minimum altitude.”

“This maneuver, combined with other instances of not meeting the airborne standard that makes the Blue Angels the exceptional organization that it is, led to my decision to step down.”

Navy Capt. Greg McWherter will replace Koss. McWherter lead the team prior to Koss taking the job in November of 2010.

Koss is from Orange Park, FL just outside of Jacksonville. Four of the Hornets, flying in a diamond formation completed a maneuver too close to the ground. He grounded the team after the incident.

The team debriefed, flew to their home base in Pensacola, FL and Koss ordered a safety stand-down.

As a result, performances in Annapolis, MD and Millville, NJ are canceled.

It appears performances at the Rockford, IL Airfest and the Evansville, IN Freedom Festival Air Show will be canned as well.
