Some Helpful Hints for People Doing Taxes

The date to get your 2010 taxes filed by is fast approaching. Here are some last minute tax tips that may assist you.

1. Do your filing electronically. Its quick, convenient, and becoming more popular every year, for good reason. Millions of people have used e-filing since its inception 20 years ago. In fact, last year, 70 percent of all people in the US doing their taxes used this wonderful service to send in their tax returns.

2. Make sure your identifying numbers are accurate-This usually refers to your social security number, but if you have a wife or husband, or children, make sure to check that theirs are correct as well. If you are off by as much as one digit, it could severely delay any refund you might get.

3.Double check your math-if you are filling it out by hand, make sure the math is correct. This may take a bit, but it will ensure that your refund or what you owe is correct.

4. Make sure you are using the proper figure from the tax table. This is quick and easy to do, and makes sure that a mistake has not been made.

5. Be sure to sign the form you filled out, and to put the date on it. If you are doing a joint return, your spouse must sign it as well.

6. When you send your return in, if you are doing it the old fashioned way, be sure it is going to the proper address. You can double check this at www.irs.gov.

7. If you owe money in, you should use a check and and address it to United States Treasury. Information to include on the check is your SS #, your phone #, the year, and the tax form you used.

8. You have a couple choices when using e-payments. You can get the funds taken out of a checking account, or use a credit card. Choose whichever one is easier for you.

9. You can always ask for an extension to file. As a general rule, if you are getting money back, the IRS does not mind if you are a little late. If you owe money, make sure your payment is prompt.

10. If you want access to additional forms, help, and information, see www.irs.gov. Tax season might be stressful but if you just take your time, learn how to use e-filing and double check your math and information, it makes it a lot easier.
