Saving money is sometimes one of the hardest things to do as we try to balance our budgets and accomplish all the things we need to.  At home, especially if you have children, reducing electricity and gas costs may be a constant battle, but once the family becomes accustomed to conserving, then you will see a gradual decrease and if you choose to, you can then use these extra savings to make further, more permanent changes to your lifestyle like installing solar panels.

You can begin by removing incandescent bulbs and replacing them with fluorescent bulbs and LEDs (light emitting diodes), while ensuring that all the members of the household turn off lights whenever they leave a room. Your family also plays a big role in saving money on water heating costs for washing dishes and for showers, washing of clothes, vehicles and other water uses.  They can help by not pre-rinsing dishes under the running tap before they are placed in the dishwasher and by taking shorter showers. In addition, cold or warm water can be used to wash clothes instead of hot water and a bucket can be used to catch water for washing vehicles instead of a running hose.  If you have a swimming pool, using solar pool covers will also assist in this cause.

A good way to ensure that you are indeed saving when you make these changes is to have a power audit done on your home so you can see exactly where you burn the most energy, so you will be more able to make changes in these areas and contact one of the many companies that are going green to assist you in any technical aspects relating to these changes.  Simple rearrangements will also help like placing the refrigerator in cooler areas and ensuring there is enough space behind it, or placing awnings over West-facing windows to reduce the amount of heat entering. Energy conservation and thus energy savings can be approached as a step by step process so get your family prepped and stop worrying when bill time comes around.
