There are at least three major ways in which heating oil is used. We venture to look at each of these in turn. We will also be seeking to understanding why heating oil is considered ideal for each of these applications. And for each application, we will look at the alternatives to using this liquefied petroleum product, as well the upside and downside to each of those alternatives.

Without any further ado, the three major uses of heating oil include:

Domestic heating: it emerges that there are many parts of the world where bitter cold winters are a common occurrence. Indeed, with the exception of tropical regions near the equator, it would seem as if most of the world experiences this phenomenon. During such cold winters, the main preoccupation of the affected people is keeping themselves warm. That is where the need for fuels like the said heating oil comes in: the objective being to burn such fuels, in order to produce heat. The heat (or rather warm air) which comes into contact with the heat produced by burning fuel is introduced into the house’s circulation, where it mixes with the rest of the air going circulating in the house. This makes the whole house warm, and pleasant to stay in.

The main factor which makes heating oil ideal for this use would be the fact that it is very cost effective.

Alternatives to using oil here would include opting to use natural gas or electricity. But both are rather expensive, and in some places, heating oil is more easily available than natural gas. There is also the fact that setting up a heating-oil based domestic heating system is, in many people’s estimation, easier and more cost effective than setting up the other alternative forms of domestic heating systems.

Industrial operations: we come to learn that just like diesel and electricity, heating oil can be used to fuel machines and heat boilers in the industrial setting. This means that it can be used as an industrial fuel as well. It may be argued that heating oil is not the most ideal industrial oil, but there are cases where keener calculations show that, for a given outfit, heating oil is either more easily available or cheaper than the alternatives. In such cases, it would make sense to go with it, rather than the alternative sources of energy. The alternatives, as we noted earlier, are electricity (which at times can be extremely expensive or simply unavailable in remote out-of-grid places) and diesel (which may be unaffordable in certain parts of the world).

Power generation: rather than using nuclear reactors, hydro-plants or diesel generators to produce electricity, there are rare cases where people opt to use heating oil in Ireland to generate power. This is mainly thanks to the heavy investments necessary to set up nuclear electricity plants or hydroelectric plants: which push them out of reach in many cases. That would necessitate the generation of electricity using simple generators fueled by diesel or heating oil. The fact that heating oil operated power generators tend no to be not too expensive, and the considerable combustion efficiency associated with heating oil makes it ideal for this (power generation) purpose.
