Weaning kittens is not an easy task, but needs to be done if you have very young kittens at home. Weaning is the process of getting a kitten used to solid foods instead of a mother’s milk (or milk substitute). This has to be done gradually and over time or else it will not work well.
The weaning process should begin when the cat is around four weeks old. Make sure that the kittens eyes have opened and it seems to be able to see. If the kitten’s eyes are still closed, or it is still blind (the kitten may remain blind after the eyes are open for a while), then wait a couple weeks until his eyes are open to begin weaning. Also ensure that they are walking and steady on their feet. These are simply signs of developmental stages which are important to go through prior to weaning.
The weaning process should last about four weeks. If you have the cat’s mother around, then let her be involved in the weaning. She should be able to determine when the kitten is ready and will help the kitten get used to solid foods.
Firstly, you will want to introduce the kitten to a food bowl. Pour some kitten formula into the bowl and bring the kitten near it. Let her smell it and she will probably begin to lap at it. Let her eat until she is full.
Now, you will want to begin introducing solid foods (make sure it is kitten food!) into this. Put a little bit of solid food into the bowl and mix in a lot of kitten formula. Keep doing this every day using less formula and more solid food every time. During this time it is okay if the kitten is still drinking its mother’s milk in addition to the food. After about four weeks, the kitten should be fully weaned.
