What Is Cheap Soundproofing?
Cheap soundproofing can mean a lot of different things to a person depending on their budget and skill level. For some, cheap may mean free or close to it, while for others a few hundred dollars seems reasonable to get the peace and quiet you desire. The good news is that there are areas of your room that you have probably overlooked that will help you achieve adequate soundproofing to block most airborne noises.
It is important to remember that there are no shortcuts in soundproofing. Products like soundproof window curtains might provide you will some relief, you need to try and find the source of your issue instead of trying to cover it up. The first step in cheap soundproofing is to seal all air gaps in your home. The most common sources of sound bleed is through holes in the frame of your room openings like windows and doors. Even the receptacle outlets in your walls likely have no insulation or sealant to make them airtight. Start by removing all of your door and window trim and the outlet covers on your receptacles. Then, using a few tubes of caulk and a product like Great Stuff foam, fill every hole, gap, and crack like it’s 30 below outside.
Proper Soundproofing Techniques
If after replacing all of your trim you find that these cheap soundproofing methods did give you the results you were looking for, it may be time to move to more complex soundproofing techniques. The easiest and cheapest way to actually soundproof a room is to double your Sheetrock in the room with a sound barrier adhesive like green glue. Sound is stopped by mass, and the only way to make your walls soundproof is to increase their mass using denser materials, or more of it.
