You might have often admired Art Deco objects and thought how much you would like something like that in your own home. Before you decide to buy anything Art Deco there are a few things you should know. Art Deco was not a proper art movement but more like a collection of trends that appeared in the 1920s and 1930s in architecture, fashion and product design. What all these trends had in common was a love for luxury and individualism often bordering on decadence. Art Deco liked expensive materials but above all liked contrast, therefore it could place an expensive material such as gold next to something modern and man-made such as bakelite. Other contrasts were created by bold and unusual pairing of colors. Also by mixing motifs found in the art of ancient civilizations with the lines typical of industrial design. In fact if you look at Art Deco architecture you often find buildings that look like ocean liners with decorations that could have been made by the Ancient Egyptians.
If you want something Art Deco in your home you have three choices. The first would be to find a proper Art Deco object, bear in mind that it would have been made in a limited number and with expensive materials and therefore would be quite an investment. The second is to find your Art Deco mirror or whatever you want among the many pieces made those days in an Art Deco style which were mass produced rather than unique pieces. These would be easier to find and more affordable than the first case. The third option is to get something made today in an Art Deco style, you will be surprised by how popular Art Deco still is, you will be able to find anything from French Art Deco chandeliers to cabinets. This option will be more affordable and will give you a wider selection and there will still be expensive and high quality items.
