If there is something that I love, I would have to say that it is modern furniture. There are a lot of different designs out there that could be called classics, but today I am going to just discuss a few of the absolute best. I am going to talk about things like the Eames lounge chair, the Murphy wall bed, and the Exposition Sofa. There is a lot to discuss, so, let’s get started. – The Murphy Wall Bed While you may be confused by this name, I have no question that you know exactly what I am talking about when I tell you this: it is the bed that flips up into the wall. You have seen these in countless movies, TV shows, and cartoons. The Murphy wall bed is, without question, an American classic. Its invention occurred over a hundred years ago by a man named Mr. Murphy, who, as you might have guessed, needed to save some room. Mr. Murphy lived in a one-room apartment and wanted to be able to entertain guests more formally. Pretty soon he had himself a working bed that could disappear within seconds, and not long after that, he had a company that would still be doing well long after he was already gone.
- Exposition Sofa
This sofa, like the Murphy wall bed, is also an absolute classic. While it isn’t as easy to describe as the Murphy bed, it is very recognizable. It is a simple design, and doesn’t have any arm rests to speak of. While I am a big fan of arm rests, this is a situation where I can accept the oversight. It has a visible metal frame, and I have only seen it done in black or white leather. At the end of the day, this is about as minimalist as you can get, and that is just the sort of thing I like.
- Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman
When I was a kid, my dad happened across two of these chairs at work, and I soon knew why people loved them. This chair and ottoman make up what has to be some of the most comfortable seating ever. It was supposedly designed with the thought of a baseball glove, and if you look at it for very long, you can kind of see the connection. Like everything else on this list, this is an expensive way to avoid the floor that came with your living space, but regardless of price, I intend to buy one of these sooner or later.
- Le Corbusier Grande Comfort Sofa
While this sofa is very iconic, it also is very easy to describe. Like the Exposition, I have only seen it in black and white leather, but unlike the Exposition, it has very spacious armrests. In fact, the armrests appear to just be an extension of the sofa’s back, and consequently, they are very high. In fact, the armrests are so high, that they are a bit hard to use. The best way to describe this sofa is to say that it is square. There is a chair version of this, and it just about perfectly square. In both the chair and sofa versions you will find that there is a shiny metal frame wrapping around it, and that while it is square, it also is comfortable. Also, if you ever want to throw a book or magazine on it, you can easily place them on the back or the armrest. Certainly there are other options out there when it comes to furniture, but in my opinion, if you can get a Murphy wall bed, and a couple Eames chairs, you should be able to live well wherever you are!
