There are two major reasons as to why many people opt to create their own vinyl signs. This is against a background where, rather than create the signs by themselves, the people in question can also engage professionals (such as graphic designers) to do the signs for them. The latter option would give them the chance to save considerable amounts of time, whilst also giving them the opportunity to get more ‘professional-looking’ signs. It is therefore, at first sight, very surprising that they opt to create their own signs. Doing so, after all, means sacrificing considerable amounts of time, and taking the risk of ending up with unprofessional-looking signs. So, why is it that people would still opt to create their own vinyl signs? The two reasons as to why many people opt for this DIY (Do It Yourself) approach include the facts that:
1. Professionals often charge exorbitant rates for vinyl lettering creation work. Sometimes, you ask for quotations from graphic designers and copywriters for this sort of work, only to be given unbelievably high figures. If the budget you have for the project is limited, you may end up being unable to afford the rates charged, which would force you to do the signs by yourself, even if you’d have otherwise preferred to have the project done professionally. You come to realize that in a professional sign-creation project, the graphic designer’s fees alone are likely to be higher than the cost of the signboard (wooden or metallic), the paint and the vinyl required for the job. Against that sort of background, if you don’t have much extra money left after the purchase of those prerequisites, you’d be left with no alternative, but to do the signs by yourself – and hope for the best outcomes.
Still on this point, we may mention the fact that there are people who feel that their vinyl-sign creation projects are not huge enough to warrant professional input (and the sums of money charged for such input). Thus, where the stakes are not very high – for instance, in the creation of internal directional signs, many people would opt for the DIY approach.
2. The DIY approach to creation of signs gives the sign owners greater control over the project. It turns out that when you engage professionals to make signs for you, you are only given a chance to specify your needs at a general level, and then told to ‘leave everything’ to them. Now that is a good thing, inasmuch as gives you the opportunity to save time. But it is also a tricky thing, inasmuch as means relinquishing control over the project. More often than not, the professionals will do things as they see fit, which may not necessarily be in sync with your individual needs. Yet you can’t micro-manage them, to ensure that all your desires in terms of signage are met. The best you can do is to specify your needs at a general level, leaving the ‘professionals’ to use their discretion in the execution of the finer details.
While at it, we also need to take note of the fact that there are people who have personal interests in graphic design, and who therefore feel that the execution of their own vinyl-sign creation projects would be a potential source of fun for them. Indeed, to the extent that anyone can create an appealing vinyl sign, the sense of accomplishment after hacking the project successfully would definitely make most people happy with themselves.
