As much as people may like to claim that they are literally a sign of wisdom or mental maturity, the truth of the matter is that wisdom teeth are simply nothing more than useless extra teeth that some people develop after reaching a certain age. Wisdom teeth can be any of the third or fourth molars and usually appear between the ages of 17 and 25. Adults will usually get about four wisdom teeth although it is entirely possible to have more. In this case, the wisdom teeth are also known as supernary teeth.
In any case, these extra teeth do not really serve any particular purpose and can be quite painful when they are growing. In some cases, a person may suffer from impacted wisdom teeth, which do not fully come out of the gums. In these cases, the impacted teeth will need to be taken out by a qualified dentist. There are many causes of impacted wisdom teeth and these include overcrowded teeth and jaw tumors which can cause bone destruction.
There are quite a few different impacted wisdom teeth symptoms and any of these symptoms should be sufficient cause for the individual to seek help from a qualified dentist. One of the main symptoms of impacted wisdom teeth that most people fail to notice is an unpleasant taste around the mouth area. These symptoms may be accompanied by others such as painful swallowing. Tenderness of the gums leading to frequent bleeding may also be a sign of impacted wisdom teeth especially around the area where your molars are located. Furthermore, there may even be additional and more alarming symptoms such as lymph nodes around your neck.
In general, wisdom teeth that do not fully erupt may not cause any particular problems, but if left alone, they may start to interfere with normal functions such as limiting the opening of the mouth and even with normal eating and chewing.
